as i was looking for the quote i read in “my oscar weekend” by diablo cody (yes, the one i referenced in the previous posting), i re-read something i didn’t understand or skimmed right over in my first read of the article.
there are throngs of sign-wielding protesters on highland avenue who would like us to know, among
other things, that HOLLYWOOD IS FULL OF PHONIES PROFITING FROM SIN. ~diablo cody on relating her oscar experience (as she arrives to the red carpet) in entertainment weekly, 7 march 2008, page98.
really?
in america, it seems, we’ll protest anything.
guess it’s our guarantee for freedom of speech, freedom of expression.
and here’s mine.
i totally disagree with the protester’s message.
i see things totally different since…
since my friend attended sundance and shared much of her experience with me,
since i now share her (and at least another friend’s) desire to see theology in film,
since i have taken several classes on culture while in seminary,
since i have looked for meaning of my faith outside the church,
since i now love making the connections between theology and culture,
since i am engaged in the culture (not drawing away from it) where i see god in new and refreshing ways.
not that this protester (or these protesters, whichever the case may be) was aiming his/her message at diablo, but i wonder if he/she ever stopped to consider really what was being communicated…communicated to diablo, her manager (who made reference to it when he saw diablo on the red carpet), other passerbys, any myself after reading about it.
i wonder if he/she believes that everyone in hollywood is a phony.
i wonder what sin he/she is referring to.
i wonder if he/she believes that everything that goes down in hollywood is sin.
i wonder what he/she was really getting at.
i wonder if he/she has ever seen the connection between theology and culture.
i wonder if he/she has ever seen jesus’ connection to the culture of his day.
i wonder if he/she even dares, or cares, to ask such questions…or if he/she simply desires to protest something and be seen doing so.
