I compete because I love to compete.
I love to win, but there’s a bigger picture.
~Rick Draney,
wheelchair tennis and quad rugby player
this quote spoken by a man who became an “incomplete quadriplegic” at the age of 19 from a car wreck where he suffered a broken neck and spinal cord injury.
draney chose to compete rather than surrender…
to fight rather than give up…
to win rather than lose.
and he chose to pick up a tennis racket and dominate the field of wheelchair tennis.
talk about a bigger picture…i think draney sees it.
lydia and i went to lunch at a famous landmark around pasadena (no longer located there but can be found in san marino or alahambra), twohey’s…or 2EE’s (not sure which spelling preceded the other).
when i asked lydia about twohey’s, as to the kind of restuarant or the type of food they served, she described it as a diner. a diner? a diner in southern california? we’ll see…i thought to myself.
and that is exactly what it was…a genuine diner. not sure why i had a hard time believing that twohey’s was a diner or that there was one located in southern california (as if diner’s don’t exist everywhere)…but i was proven wrong the moment i entered the front door.
decor befitting of a diner…
matronly waitresses…
napkins with the original 2EE’s logo…
replica of a 1943 menu mounted on the wall as decoration…

twohey’s, in true diner fashion, has a plethora of foods to choose from, including a meatloaf sandwich which lydia ate (a double-decker meatloaf sandwich with 4 pieces of meatloaf…2 on each side). apparently, it was pretty good,
noting the expression on her face.
i am not sure what took over me, causing me to uncharacteristically order a chili hamburger and fries.
what in the world was i thinking?
not sure but it didn’t seem as if i had any problems finishing it off…except for half the bun i layed aside, thinking it might be healthier if i ate only half the bun rather than the whole (as if one could tell i was concerned with health at this point).
margit, needed the run followed by the spin workout for that one!
